CRE ARTEMIS

CRE ARTEMIS brings people and expertise together to investigate why bowel cancer is affecting more younger adults.

Understanding early-onset bowel cancer

Research to find answers

Why are more people developing bowel cancer before the age of 50? CRE ARTEMIS is a national research collaboration working to understand the factors behind this increase.

Our work connects laboratory science, clinical expertise and lived experience. By investigating how bowel cancer begins and develops in younger people, we aim to build knowledge that can inform future prevention and earlier detection.

Three connected research themes

Our programme examines the disease from different perspectives, bringing the findings together to build a clearer picture.

Gut microbiome

Investigating how microorganisms in the bowel may contribute to the development of cancer.

Molecular mapping

Mapping biological changes across bowel tissue, polyps and cancer.

Functional testing

Using research models to examine the processes that may drive early-onset bowel cancer.

A national collaboration

Led by Associate Professor Dan Buchanan at the University of Melbourne, CRE ARTEMIS connects researchers and clinicians across Australian institutions.

The centre also supports the next generation of researchers through training and mentoring.

Meet our people

Lived experience belongs in research

People affected by early-onset bowel cancer bring knowledge that research cannot gain from laboratory or clinical data alone. Their perspectives help keep the work connected to the questions and experiences that matter to patients and families.
